analysts. joan, do you think wayne lapierre has lost it? he got a grilling on fox yesterday. let's listen to how he reacted. >> the president's kids are safe and we're all thankful for it. the point of that ad -- >> they also face a threat that most children do not face. >> tell that to the people in newtown. >> do you really think that the president's children are the same kind of target as every school child in america? that's ridiculous and you know it, sir. you talk -- one of the points of that ad that i want to ask you about is you made it a class argument, the rich, the elite. they have bodyguards. they have security. >> sure. and mayor bloomberg has it. mayor bloomberg has it. >> i'll tell you somebody else who has security, you do. >> sometimes, yeah -- >> on capitol hill you had security. today you have security. >> yeah, you talk about hypocrisy right out in the open, we've had all kinds of threats coming. >> you know, trying to outline those sentences, there's a lot of grunts going on there. i don't think there's a lot of words or verbs in there. good for chris. he caught him,

of a background check rely on fearmongering. nra chief wayne lapierre spread ridiculous lies on fox news sunday. >> what they'll do is they'll turn this universal check on the law abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people. and law-abiding people don't want that. >> well, law-abiding people want a universal background check system. more than nine in ten gun households want one. more than eight in ten nra member says the same thing. the president is quick to point out the popularity of the law. >> we know for example from polling that universal background checks are universally supported just about. by gun others. the overwhelming majority of gunowners think that's a good idea. so if we have lobbyists in washington claiming to speak for gun owners saying something different we need to go to the source and reach out to people directly. we can't allow those filters to get in the way of common sense. >> the gun lobby is worried. the president is making headway on this issue, which is why his opponents insist on distracting the country with things like this. the white house released a p

narrative no matter what the circumstances are. you saw wayne lapierre this weekend talking on fox news, and chris wallace was the only person who i've seen really go at wayne lapierre and talk to him person to person about what the flaws in his argument are. short of that you very rarely hear them get put on the defensive in a way that makes other people cringe and perhaps their own membership think they've done this for a long time. they're going to continue to do it for a long time. they're willing to fight to the last left person. they're going to keep on doing what they do, and they've got very powerful enablers. we mentioned harry reid, he has powerful enablers on capitol hill to keep doing what they're doing. >> sam, we have less than a minute left, and you're going to stick around, but what did you think of keith ellison's view of the progressives. >> i think it's a problem. president obama is a centrist democrat whose policies are consistent with that. i think it's important for progressives and liberals to continue to agitate for issues that are important to them as opposed to

, background checks and the like is wayne lapierre, whenever he goes on the air, i think he illustrates just how radical and crazy this wing of the nra is. i don't think that represents the actual view of the majority of nra members. >> it does not. >> i don't know, i don't know. >> mika, 80% of nra members support universal background checks. a majority of nra members support getting rid of these high capacity magazines. i'm telling you the overwhelming majority of nra members are hunters and people that want to support -- >> double the price and making them sell out. >> the survivalist wing of the nra. >> there's a lot of them. >> you say there's a lot of them. >> a lot of gun owners and people buying guns. people want their second amendment rights. the clash -- we're kind of not having the right conversation. this has to be about common sense gun safety and live and breathe in memories of people who died not just chicago or newtown and the last decade or so. we're too caught in wayne lapierre and rhetoric, to me nra is about buying and selling guns, not about second amendment and gun safe

of segues into what i want to talk about. and the nra we have seen wayne lapierre acting like a fool. i think they are really concerned, because they whelded an amazing amount of power for who knows how long and they are seeing that slip through their fingers. they targeted seven candidates this past fall, and michael bloomberg purposefully challenged those seven of those candidates and he won five of the seven. >> stephanie: it's time to say the emperor has no clothes. they have no power anymore, right? >> caller: yes, i wish your republican politicians could figure that out and not live in fear of those guys any longer. >> stephanie: absolutely. be gone, you have no power here. wayne lapierre >> i think they'll turn this universal check of the law-abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people. >> i don't quite understand what is so bad -- >> stephanie: no one does. >> you -- you register your car -- >> stephanie: right. >> people have a license plate that can be identified. >> stephanie: right, and a car isn't designed to kill. it can. >> theed in that
